Terms Scanner — Privacy Policy
Effective 26 September 2026. Applies to the Terms Scanner Chrome extension and its API at terms-scanner.vercel.app.
What the extension does
When you click Scan this site, the extension finds the current website's terms of service, privacy policy, cookie policy and the documents they link to, reads them, and shows you a short summary of the clauses that matter, with a link to each source sentence. You can then ask follow-up questions about those documents.
What data is processed
| Data | Why | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| The text of the legal pages of the site you scan, and the text of its cookie-consent banner | To produce the summary and answer your questions | Sent to our API and from there to an AI model provider (OpenRouter and the model it routes to). Not stored by us after the response is returned. |
| The site's domain and the URLs of the pages read | To label the summary and link to sources | Same as above. |
| Your follow-up questions | To answer them | Same as above. |
| Scan results and chat history | So you don't have to rescan a site you already scanned | Kept only in your browser's extension storage (results for 30 days, chat for the session). Never uploaded. |
What is not collected
- No account, no sign-in, no email address, no identifiers about you.
- No browsing history. The extension only acts on the tab where you click Scan, and only when you click.
- No page content other than the legal documents and the cookie banner it reads for the scan.
- No cookies, passwords, form contents or personal data from the pages.
- No analytics or tracking inside the extension.
Third parties
The API runs on Vercel. The AI analysis runs through OpenRouter, which forwards the text to the selected model provider (currently Anthropic). Each processes the text only to return a response and under their own privacy terms. We do not sell or share the data with anyone else, and we do not use it for advertising or to train models.
Browser permissions
- Access to websites: needed to fetch a site's legal pages using your own session, since many sites only show terms to logged-in users or block automated fetching.
- Tabs and scripting: to open the site's landing page in a background tab, find the legal links in its footer, read the cookie banner and close that tab afterwards. Your own tab is never navigated.
- Side panel and storage: to show the summary and remember it on your device.
Your choices
Uninstalling the extension removes everything it stored. Clearing the extension's storage in Chrome does the same without uninstalling.
